The Ohio Department of Education has stated that home schoolers who are teaching Nazi propaganda to children are not violating any laws, as per a statement obtained by VICE News on Thursday.
In late January, two parents operating a Neo-Nazi home school network, Dissident Home school, with thousands of members on Telegram, were uncovered. Logan and Katja Lawrence openly advocate teaching white supremacist ideologies and aim to raise their students to become "wonderful Nazis." Katja Lawrence started the network due to difficulty finding Nazi-approved educational materials for her home schooled children and has shared lesson plans that include Hitler quotes and birthday celebrations for the infamous leader. Logan Lawrence was also discovered to have dressed in blackface during his high school years to instigate and harass black students.
Ohio officials launched an investigation but have decided not to take action against the parents. According to the Department of Education, the district superintendent's review is limited to ensuring academic proficiency and meeting the minimum educational standards which the children appear to have met.
As Republican lawmakers attempt to censor information in public schools, such as removing books discussing race and sexual orientation from library shelves in Florida, the outcome of the Ohio home school investigation highlights the ongoing struggle for control over the education of the nation's children.
