UNION COUNTY - The county's top cop was replaced Friday in the wake of an internal affairs investigation into the Elizabeth police director, Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced.

First Assistant Attorney General Jennifer Davenport has taken over for Michael A. Monahan, who served as acting Union County Prosecutor since January 2018, Grewal said in a news release.

The move comes on the heels of a prosecutor's office investigation’s findings that the Elizabeth Police Director James Cosgrove used derogatory terms to describe his staff. Grewal called for Cosgrove to immediately resign from his position in the release.
